Happy Feet: 9 Best Tips for Taking Care of Feet

Your feet are the silent superheroes of your body, always there to carry you through whatever life throws your way. Yet your feet are often one of the last body parts you think about.

Truthfully, taking care of your feet isn’t just about your feet, it’s about taking care of your whole body. If your feet aren’t in tip-top shape (tip-toe shape?), then your whole internal ecosystem can go out of whack.

Whether you’re a fitness baddie or a desk butterfly, these 9 tips will help you keep your feet happy and healthy:

Wear Properly Fitting Shoes

It all starts with the right kicks. Make sure your shoes fit just right, give your feet the support they need, and let them wiggle around comfortably. Steer clear of shoes that are squeezing or moving around too much, because those can lead to all sorts of issues like blisters, bunions or worse.

Oh, and don’t forget to swap out worn-out shoes regularly to keep that support and cushioning on point!

Always Go for Clean and Dry

Keeping your feet clean is a big deal, it’s like their first line of defense against funky stuff! So, give them a good scrub with warm water and gentle soap daily.

Always make sure to dry your feet well, especially between those toes. Moisture is like a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, so rock some moisture-wicking socks and switch them out often, especially after you’ve been sweating up a storm or getting your workout on.

Trim Your Toenails (Properly)

Alright, let’s talk ingrown toenails—ouch, right? Not only do they hurt, but they can also get infected, which is a total no-go.

To keep those toenails in check, trim them straight across, none of that rounded edge stuff. Grab yourself a proper nail clipper, cut carefully, and then smooth out any rough spots with a file.

Hydration Forever

Just like the rest of your body, your feet will thank you for a little hydration. Slap on some foot cream or lotion to keep your feet hydrated and happy.

If you have rough spots like your heels and soles, be sure to give them some extra TLC. Oh, and if you’re feeling fancy, bust out a sugar scrub or pumice stone to get rid of those dead skin cells. Your feet will feel thank you!

Protect Your Feet in Public

Public spots like gyms, pools, and locker rooms are a party zone for bacteria and fungi. So, don’t let your feet crash that party! Rock some shower shoes or flip-flops whenever you’re hanging out in communal areas to protect against stuff like athlete’s foot. Save barefoot walks for the beach or your backyard, especially if it’s all damp and humid out there!

Stretch and Strengthen

Yes, your feet need a little workout, too. Treat your feet to some stretches and exercises just like you do for the rest of your body.

Exercises like toe curls, ankle circles, and calf stretches are perfect for this. If your feet are feeling tense, massage them with a tennis ball or foam roller.

Elevate and Rest

If you spend all day on your feet, make time to show them some love when you get home.

Kick back and prop your peds above heart level to ease the swelling and help regulate blood flow. If you can swing it, sneak in some mini breaks during the day to give your feet a breather. Especially if your job involves a ton of standing around all day.

Add Some Support

Look, if your feet are doing their own thing, whether they’re flat like pancakes or arched like a bridge, make sure they get the extra support they need.

Slap in some cushy insoles or orthotic inserts to keep your feet comfy. And if you’re really feeling fancy, custom-made orthotics can help straighten out any biomechanical hiccups and ease the pain from chronic foot pain.

Stop It: Get Some Help

Just like the rest of your body, don’t forget to tune in to what your feet are saying.

If they’re giving you grief in the form of pain, swelling, or anything funky, it could be a sign that something’s up. Don’t brush it off, get yourself to a doctor or podiatrist to get the proper care you need.

Leave a Footprint

Looking after your feet isn’t just an extra thing to do, it’s a must for feeling flawless from head to toe, literally. Stick to these 9 tips like glue, and you’ll dodge those pesky foot problems and kick discomfort to the curb.
