10 Handy Tips for Hand Health

You have to hand it to one specific part of our body that works for us every single day and rarely gets a round of applause…it’s our hands, in case you couldn’t tell from all the hand puns.

In all seriousness, our hands are amazing tools that help us with everything from texting our boos to feeding ourselves, so it’s important we love them just as much as the rest of our bodies.

So, get your hands ready to take notes (or just like, let them relax), these are 10 super easy tips to keep your hands feeling fantastic:

Keep it Moist

Your hands need hydration, too!

Think of moisturizer as a big drink of water for your hands. They work hard and can get super dry, especially after washing. So, take the time to lovingly apply some hand cream throughout the day to keep them soft and happy.

If you wear acrylic nails you know that they can sometimes cause your natural nails and cuticles to become dry, so make sure to use cuticle oil or an extra-rich hand cream.

Hydrated Hands are Happy Hands

Hydration is essential for literally every part of your body, and your hands are no exception! When you hydrate, you’re helping your entire body from hand to toe.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

Did I mention sunscreen? It’s true, your hands need SPF, too! Sun damage isn’t just for your face—it can age and damage literally any part of your body. So, don’t forget to apply sunscreen when you’re out and about to keep those hands looking soft and fresh.

Wash Your Hands, But Don’t Overdo It

Washing your hands is important, especially in our modern society. But be careful not to go overboard. Too much soap and water can strip away natural oils and leave your hands feeling like sandpaper. This includes hand sanitizer! Look for that balance and lotion up after each wash.

Nail Care Matters

Keep those nails trimmed and clean, friends! Long nails might look pretty, but they can trap all sorts of nasties underneath. So, grab a nail clipper and a brush, and give those nails some love.

If you wear acrylics or false nails, make sure to run a nail brush over them.

Stretch It Out

Did you know your hands have muscles, too? Give them a stretch and a workout now and then to keep them strong and flexible. Squeezing a stress ball or doing some finger stretches can work wonders.

Here are 3 quick hand stretches to try:

  • Finger Extension: Stick your arm out in front of you like you’re reaching for something. Hold your fingers with your other hand and slowly pull them back towards you, feeling the stretch in your palm and fingers. Hold it there for 30 seconds before switching sides.
  • Wrist Flexor Stretch: Push your arm out straight and keep your palm down. Push down on your fingertips with your other hand, feeling the stretch in your wrist and forearm. Hang out in that stretch for 30 seconds, then swap sides.
  • Wrist Extensor Stretch: Hold your arm out straight again, but this time, palm up. Use your other hand to press down on the back of your hand, stretching out the underside of your wrist and forearm. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then swap arms.

Glove Up

Whether you’re gardening or doing the dishes, gloves are your hands’ best friends. They protect against all kinds of ickiness and keep your hands looking and feeling great.

Watch Your Posture

Believe it or not, how you sit can affect your hands, too. Slouching over your keyboard all day can strain your wrists and fingers. So, sit up straight and give those hands a break now and then (they deserve it, and so does the rest of you).

Also, when you’re doing stuff that makes your hands do the same thing over and over again, grab some gear to help out and ease the strain. Think comfy keyboards with soft keys, ergonomic pens, and padded grips on literally anything.

Eat Well

You are what you eat, right? So, munch on those fruits and veggies for healthy hands. Eat these 5 foods for maximum hand health:

  1. Salmon: You need omega-3 fatty acids to nourish your hands and skin from within. Salmon and other fish are full of healthy fats and Omega 3s that help with skin elasticity and hydration, which can prevent dryness.
  2. Avocado: Another source of healthy fats, avocados are loaded with mega vitamins E and C, both of which are essential for skin health. Vitamin E is a super powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from damage, while vitamin C stimulates collagen production.
  3. Spinach: Popeye’s fav. This leafy green food is dripping in vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron. Spinach also helps to oxygenate your skin, keeping it healthy and vibrant.
  4. Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes aren’t just for Thanksgiving! Rich in beta-carotene, sweet potatoes are full of that precious vitamin A.
  5. Berries: Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, all berries are bursting with antioxidants.
  6. Almonds: Snack on almonds to nourish your skin from the inside out; they’re a prime source of Vitamin E and antioxidants that help armor up your skin from UV damage and environmental stressors.

Listen to Your Hands

Last but not least, if your hands are trying to tell you something like they’re in pain or feeling stiff, listen up! Don’t ignore those signals. It might be time to see a pro and get things checked out.
