Unlock Your Best Lips With My Top Skin Care Tips

Lip care is no joke in my daily skincare routine. Why? Because having healthy, luscious lips isn’t just about looking good – it’s about feeling good. Name one time you felt great with dry, crusty lips…I’ll wait.

But hey, with all the products and advice out there, keeping those lips plush and smooth doesn’t have to feel like mission impossible.

Now, as someone who knows a thing or two about skincare, I’m always on the prowl for tips to keep my lips from feeling like a desert. Whether battling dry skin from the airplane or gearing up for some sun-soaked fun in LA, I’ve got a bag of tricks to keep my pout on point, no matter the season.

These are my top tips for taking care of your lips:

Essential Lip Care Tips

Keeping your lips soft, supple, and smooth is easy with these 5 tips-

Hydrate and Nourish

First, don’t be thirsty—drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and lips hydrated. Water is your ticket to hydration from the inside out.

On the outside, applying a lip balm rich in Vitamin E, shea butter, or coconut oil can transform dried or chapped lips back to their original supple state.

Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation removes dead skin, and I make it a habit to exfoliate my lips gently once or twice a week with both a manual and chemical exfoliator.

If your nose turned up when you read ‘chemical,’ just hear me out:

Manual vs. chemical exfoliants

Manual exfoliants are physical scrubs or tools that shed off dead skin cells from the surface. Think sugar, salt, walnut, or even the classic St. Ives Apricot scrub everyone and their mamas have tried.

The advantage of manual exfoliants is that you have more control over the pressure and intensity of exfoliation. Still, too much pressure can lead to over-exfoliation.

Chemical exfoliants, on the other hand, contain ingredients that dissolve dead skin cells, allowing them to be shed easily.

They work by using chemical compounds such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), like glycolic acid, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), like salicylic acid, to loosen dead skin cells.

You’ve probably already used a chemical exfoliant before, even if you didn’t call it that. Some examples include:

One major advantage of these exfoliants is that they can be formulated in different strengths to accommodate skin conditions like acne or redness. However, one major disadvantage is that they give you less control over the intensity of exfoliation.

Note: You’ll need to use both exfoliants 1-2 times per week for soft, healthy lips.

Protect Your Lips From The Elements

I always remember to protect my lips from the sun’s harmful UV rays and the wind, and so should you.

Choose a lip balm with at least SPF 20, and in harsh weather, go for balms that offer extra protection. Products with beeswax and petroleum jelly (shea butter if you’re plant-based) will have the best protection and moisture.

Switch Things Up With A Lip Mask

Occasionally, I treat my lips to an intensive care session with a lip mask. These masks are great for deep hydration and contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera. Switch things up with a lip mask that doubles as an indulgent treat, with ingredients like cacao or berry.

Reapply Often

I can’t understate this- lip balm isn’t forever! I make a point of reapplying lip balm, chapstick, or some form of moisture every few hours or immediately after eating or drinking to maintain continuous protection.

Advanced Lip Treatments

I’m super excited to spill some of my favorite insider tips for lip care that’ll totally revitalize and protect your lips!

Targeted Lip Treatments

  • Overnight lip masks: I recommend using hydrating lip masks rich in ingredients like hyaluronic acid and collagen overnight. These masks provide deep moisture and help plump the lips for a fuller appearance in the morning, giving you that ‘I woke up like this’ look.
  • Exfoliating lip scrubs: A weekly exfoliating treatment with a sugar-based lip scrub can remove dead skin cells, making smooth lips perfect for even lipstick application.
  • Intensive lip serums: Before bed, I apply an intensive lip serum containing peptides and antioxidants, which help repair and restore lip moisture overnight. I wouldn’t use a serum more than twice per week.
  • Thick lip balms: When in doubt, shea butter (pretend that rhymes). I swear by using a thick, emollient lip balm with shea butter before sleeping to lock in moisture and soothe chapped lips overnight.
  • Lip retinol treatments: Targeted retinol treatments designed for the lip area can help minimize fine lines and prevent signs of aging.

Keep Me in Your Back Pocket
